Spain golf holidays - Golf de Pals

Golf de Pals Pals, Catalonia

Golf de Pals opened its first nine holes in 1966, designed by the English architect Fred W. Hawtree, and was extended to a full eighteen in 1970 — the first 18-hole course in Catalonia and still the oldest on the Costa Brava. It was built through century-old pine forest on the dunes of the Arenals de Mar estate, and the story goes that not a single tree was felled without being personally marked first. The course plays to a par of 73, links in spirit but wooded in character, with narrow fairways threading between the pines and greens well defended by bunkers. The par-four 4th, played from a high tee box, is one of the layout's genuine highlights, and water only comes into play on two holes, so this is a course that punishes wayward shots more through trees and sand than water. It hosted the first Spanish Open of the European professional tour in 1972 and the European Ladies' Team Championship in 1989. Book Golf de Pals for a round with genuine history behind it, still asking the same searching questions of accuracy off the tee that it did nearly sixty years ago. (...)

Spain golf holidays - Camiral Tour Course (ex PGA Catalunya)

Camiral Tour Course (ex PGA Catalunya) Caldes de Malavella, Catalonia

Camiral Tour opened in October 2005, laid out by Neil Coles MBE and Ángel Gallardo on the same forested estate outside Girona as the resort's Stadium Course, which they also designed. Both men were, at the time, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the European Tour, and it shows in a course built with the same care as its more famous neighbour, on ground originally earmarked for a Grand Prix circuit before Formula 1 moved to Montmeló. The resort was known for years as PGA Catalunya before its 2022 rename to Camiral. Where the Stadium course is renowned for its difficulty, the Tour course was planned to the same exacting standard but built wider and more forgiving, with larger greens that give a fuller range of golfers a fair shot at scoring well. Tree-lined fairways and real elevation change keep it interesting throughout, and it has co-hosted the European Tour's Qualifying School Final Stage seven times since 2008, sharing that duty with the Stadium course next door. Camiral now carries a weight few resorts in Europe can claim: it will host the 2031 Ryder Cup, Spain's first since Valderrama in 1997. Book Camiral Tour for a serious round in its own right, and pair it with the Stadium course to play both sides of what's shaping up to be one of the continent's defining golf venues.  (...)

Spain golf holidays - Golf d'Aro

Golf d'Aro Platja d’Aro, Catalonia

Golf d'Aro was designed in 1990 by Ramón Espinosa and named Best Golf Course in Europe two years later by the European Society of Golf Course Architects, a rare distinction for a course this young at the time. It sits more than 300 metres above the coast in the hills behind Platja d'Aro, bordering the protected Gavarres massif, and is the only course on the Costa Brava with the sea genuinely in view. The layout is undulating and demands precision from the tee, with strategically placed bunkers and water hazards that force you to use every club in the bag. Holes 6, 14 and 15 carry the toughest reputations on the course, testing both terrain and shot-shape in equal measure. Large, fast greens reward a controlled approach, and the views, out to the Mediterranean on one side and across the Gavarres on the other, are worth pausing for on every hole. The clubhouse is a restored 1870 Catalan farmhouse, and the club also runs a 9-hole pitch and putt alongside the championship course for a shorter session. Book Golf d'Aro for one of the most complete settings on the Costa Brava, a course that rewards good course management as much as it does raw distance. (...)
