Anfi Tauro Golf Course Mogán, Canary Islands
Anfi Tauro Golf Course opened in 2006, its front nine playing first, with the back nine following a year later. Designed by von Hagge, Smelek and Baril, working with the late Norwegian industrialist Bjørn Lyng, the course required moving more than three million cubic metres of earth to carve fairways out of barren volcanic rock in the Tauro valley, on Gran Canaria's Mogán coast. The layout runs 18 holes, par 72, Arizona desert-style, stretching from 4,448 metres off the forward tees to 6,325 metres from the back across five sets of markers. Craggy rock formations, sandy waste areas and three lakes shape the round. The 6th, a one-shot hole played straight into the Atlantic wind, and the 13th, cut into the mountainside with a stone wall guarding the left, are the two holes players tend to remember. The course has hosted a Spanish PGA Championship event. The clubhouse has a restaurant with a terrace looking out over the valley. A buggy is required, at extra cost, and the driving range sits off-site, reached by car rather than on foot — worth knowing before you book. A separate par-3 course on the property has hosted national Pitch & Putt championships. Salobre Golf Old Course Las Palmas, Canary Islands
Salobre Old Golf Course was designed by Roland Favré and opened in 1999, making it one of the oldest commercial courses on Gran Canaria. It has hosted the Spanish PGA Championship in 2006 and the Spanish Senior and Women's Championships in 2001. The course sits within Salobre Golf & Resort near Maspalomas, carved into the island's volcanic terrain south of the interior mountains. Wide fairways and elevated tees run through old lava outcrops and black sand waste areas, a landscape as much desert as parkland. The par 3s carry the sting: none more so than the 11th, the course's signature hole, a long downhill test to an offset green ringed by stone. Small, tiered greens reward precision over power, keeping the course fair for a wide range of handicaps despite its bold, rugged setting. A multi-year renovation of bunkers and tees is underway, aimed at reducing water use without touching the routing.
