Lo Romero sits on what was once a working pear and apple orchard near Pilar de la Horadada, close enough to both the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor to make the most of the coastal air. Jorge Gallén designed the course, which opened in 2008 and has earned the nickname ''the golf island'' since, working the natural undulations of the land rather than fighting them.
The course rewards accuracy over aggression, with strategically placed bunkers and eight lakes keeping the fairways honest throughout. But it's the finish that defines Lo Romero: the par-4 18th, stroke index 1, plays from an elevated tee down to a bunker-guarded fairway before demanding a final approach to an island green. It is, by any measure, one of the more memorable closing holes on the Costa Blanca, and not one for the faint-hearted.
Facilities here are kept simple rather than showy, with a driving range and putting green covering the practical side of a visit. Book Lo Romero for a genuinely well-conceived course that ends with one of the region's standout holes.

Disappointed to find the greens had been hollow tined and the fairways had been scarified and sanded. Although we love the course, we would have played elsewhere had we been advised when making our booking.
